GERMAN 5 STANDARDS
German 5 Honors at Sprayberry High School
Course overview:
You will continue to acquire German this year in some fun yet very effective ways. Our central goal is COMMUNICATION in the German language. We will also explore German-speaking and other world cultures and make cultural and linguistic comparisons with our own. Connections with other subjects (science, social studies, etc.) will be made through the language throughout the year. We will also explore opportunities to use the German language outside the classroom in a larger community. .
The main focus this semester is communication, in all four modalities, with an almost equal emphasis on speaking, reading and writing. We will be writing in a "Tagebuch" and you will read two detective novels. You will be required to write four two-three page summaries in German about them. The first and the third essays are due when you have read half of the detective stories and the second and forth ones are due at the end of books.
In addition to the readers we will discuss and focus on understanding issues or topics in today's world from a global perspective other than from that of the United States.
Readers: Langenscheidt, "Haus ohne Hoffnung"
Langenscheidt, "Tödlicher Schnee"
In addition to the readers above, you will read miscellaneous authentic German materials during the semester.
Quizzes, Tests and how your grade is computed:
There will be five assessments: one at the end of each chapter covering all the material learned in that chapter. These assessments will be individual and/or with a partner: written, spoken and listening.
The final exam is a comprehensive summative assessment at the end of the semester.
We will have weekly quizzes unless there is a test scheduled for that week. You will be assessed on the vocabulary you will learn with the readers and the assignments in the textbook section we are currently working on.
The quizzes usually focus on grammar and vocabulary.
I suggest you read each and every individual reading passage at least three times, each time reading more intensively and for different purposes. You will be surprised at how much more you pick up when re-reading.
Finally, I will require you to continue to write in a "Tagebuch." I expect three entries weekly for an excellent grade and each entry should be approx. one-half page in length. The "Tagebuch" gives you context in which to "explore" German. Unless I assign a specific topic, I expect you to write a comment about something you read in your reader or the textbook. It is very helpful and it is very important that you are diligent in writing in this journal. I will collect your journal every other Friday and you MUST give me your Tagebuch on that day. I won't accept late "Tagebücher". A missed due date is an "F" for that cycle.

What you need to do to succeed in German 5H:
Deutsch 5H is a small class and because of its size more of an "Arbeitsgemeinschaft," a working group, or team effort, than a routine class. You benefit simply from being present and the group benefits from your presence. That is why class participation, together with your homework and quizzes account for such a high percentage of your total grade. If you come to class unprepared you will not be as successful in German 5H.
With any suggestions and/or questions about the class, your performance, make-up work etc., see, call or email me immediately.
